Are You Learning
Continued education is important. Nothing groundbreaking about that. I’m sure that most people reading this have a book or two on the go right now. The question is, what is happening with everyone else in your organization?
You’re reading this, which means you likely read. What about your team? Are they taking time at night, on weekends, during lunch, to read or listen to podcasts or take online courses? Do you have an expectation that they are working on improving themselves? Do you expect your customer service team to improve their customer service skills? Do you expect your managers to improve their management skills?
If the answer is yes, then the question is, what are you doing to empower and facilitate this learning? Do you have a library of books on the subjects you wish your team to improve on? Are you subscribing to an online learning centre for your team?
Now here’s the big one, are you scheduling time during the work day for them to work on personal development?
If the answer to that is no, you may have some work to do. If you truly value the continued development of your team, you will provide a way for it. We can wish all we want that our teams are super driven individuals that will have their own personal goals and value systems that drive them to learn more and more and constantly improve themselves. The reality is test that this isn’t always the case. However, if you have team members that are highly driven towards self improvement, they will love you all the more and and appreciate the dedicated time to work on themselves. This will only prove to enhance the culture and their commitment to you.
There are many resources available to start down a path of self improvement. If you haven’t started with a program like this, or if you think you’re too busy to start, just start with one hour per week. This is an investment, but it’s one that’s sure to pay dividends.
